My name is Jody. The year 2000 will be a year I will never forget. I was in my mid 30's and had everything one could want in life. I always tried to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I ran three miles a day, worked part time as a water aerobics instructor, eating clean and was living a fulfilling life with my family.
I started feeling slightly under the weather and noticed what I thought was a tension knot in my neck. I went in for a massage to work it out, but that only made things worse. The pain became excruciating. At that time, I was on my way out of town to take my two daughters for a fun vacation so I thought maybe it'll get better, but if not I'll deal with the problem when I get back home.
When we returned home I was still in pain, so I made a trip to see the Doctor. He palpated my neck and said he would like to do a biopsy. My worst fear came true, the C word. Cancer. I was sitting alone in the exam room scared to death. He told me it was Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma. I thought this is my death sentence. I really didn't know anyone else that had cancer and the few I knew weren't so lucky.
Within a few days I was prepping for surgery. The Doctor gave me more terrifying news and said there's a possibility I waited too long because the cancer spread to my lymph nodes and larynx. There could be a chance after surgery I may never be able to talk again. Jesus watched over me and the surgeon that day and everything went well. From that point to the next twelve long months I went through radioactive Iodine treatments. I am now for the last 18 years and hopefully forever cancer free.
With the love and support from God, my team of Doctors, family, and friends helped keep my attitude positive and I am forever grateful. I am passionate about the American Cancer Society and their mission to help save lives for so many of those affected by cancer. I will always help in any way to make a difference.
